Abstract:

The characteristics of precipitation during the Dragon Boat Festival periods (i.e., 1 May to 10 May in lunar calendar) in Guiyang was analyzed from the daily precipitation data of Guiyang in years 1951?2018. Specifcally, we focused on the Dragon Boat Festival water (DBFw), which is defned as the appearance of precipitation with rainfall intensity of ≥25 mm per day for at least one day or with cumulative rainfall being higher than long-term average by ≥25% during the Dragon Boat Festival periods. The results showed that the probability of occurrence of DBFw in Guiyang was 72%, and most of them occurred after the festival (5th May in lunar calendar). The Dragon Boat Festival occurred in late May and late June. The probability of occurrence of DBFw was 50%, and the precipitation intensity was not very strong. If the festival occurred in the frst 20 days of June, DBFw was very prone to occur with the probability of 78%?91%, and the precipitation intensity also increased. The in?uence of DBFw on precipitation in early summer was significant, whereas the DBFw had no influences on precipitation in midsummer. Less precipitation was received in early summer of the year without DBFw. In contrast, ?oods and waterlogging were prone to occur in early summer of the year with DBFw and large precipitation. During the Dragon Boat Festival, the southeast monsoon on the west side of the western Pacifc subtropical high was stronger, which was conducive to the emergence of the DBFw in Guiyang.
